from the vaults

We’re getting new carpet laid, and so I’m throwing a lot of old shit out so they can move the furniture. Naturally that means, uh, not throwing shit out once I find how fascinating it is. For instance, under the “What skills can you offer LA?” section of the 1995 Left Alliance Membership Survey, there’s the question, “can you rob banks?”.

ah, you cant just leave it at that, we want ‘scans!’. are there any old LA material archieves (online for the lazy geeks amongst us)? they help while away the slow nostalgic monday afternoons at work..

There’s nothing online that I know of. I’ll see what I can do about scans. Here’s the preamble to a funny motion from 1995: “The official position of Left Alliance to NUS shall be one of Hostile Oppositional Critical Support”.

my favorite was a contribution to a debate about some motion before the la trobe university council, which involved some research commercialisation proposal, analysed the problem in terms of the repressive state apparatus (I don’t remember how exactly), and threw in as an aside “(I couldn’t get through the night without my apparatus)”.

Toby, do you remember the motion that acknowledged the existence of the space time continuum? And that Ron is Xenu?

yes, i do remember both, but i stand by my nomination of favorite. zenu was a particular preoccupation of danny sullivan at the time (dr benway). both of the motions you mentioned were the the NUS conference volume, i think, and reflected a practice of inserting at least one gag in that generally humourless tome. my nomination, by contrast, was serious agitprop!
