This violence is Australian!let it burn indeed! What makes me so angry is that the media and all the politicians are still framing this as un-Australian behaviour. All nations idealise themselves, but it is hard to think of somewhere that does it as naively as we do. The fantasy that imagines this country as egalitarian excludes so much brutality from our past. Racism has characterised this country since settlement. The scenes in Cronulla on Sunday brought to mind old footage of lynchings in the American south (the anger is totally sexualised…’they want to fuck our honourable women’). Pretend for a moment that they chanted “Jews go home”. Or worse imagine the tables had been turned and 5000 Arabs had rioted…it would be a full blown hysterical national fucking crisis with the army called in etc. Though I feel shocked at what happened on Sunday, it is only because the mask has slipped, the grotesque reality has always been here. At what cost do we sustain this fantasy of what it means to be Australian? The media should be so ashamed for the way it has slowly accepted a racialised view of criminality, the racism that is now acceptable in all the major media outlets beggars belief. My family cried while watching the footage last night, there are now parts of Sydney off limits to us, some friends whisper when saying anything too critical about the government or the nation, others are just more embarrassed by the skin they are in and will harder than ever to ‘fit in’, others are sick of turning the other cheek and will be out for revenge. This is just fucking madness.
Why aren’t the left addressing the root causes of the riots? Cause they don’t wanna know.
The riots took place because for a long time now Muslims have been calling women wearing bikinis and other beachwear stuff like sluts, whores and bitchs.
Being Muslims, you see, they cannot hack the fact that some women don’t wanna cover up. I don’t condone the reaction by the thugs, but there is no doubt they were provoked.
as fucked as that comment was, i think it shows a really important and fucked-up component of all of this. in that it’s so much about the really fucked up connections between race and sexual politics. the number of times i’ve heard people refer to the gang rapes and also, comments from white women saying that they’ve never felt ‘safer’ at cronulla than while that riot was going on.
and the thing about this really defensive reactionary aussie beach culture is that it’s about reinforcing a really violent gendered hierarchy as well. anyone who’s ever been to a beach knows that women getting sexually harassed is so much a part of beach culture, and not just about ‘muslims’ who can’t stand to see women without the veil (!?!?!?) it’s heaps more about who has a sense of ownership over the beach, and also a sense of ownership and entitlement to white women’s bodies.
and i think also that this stuff really is heaps about the beach. i lived at maroubra for years and sydney beaches have always been a haven for nazis. i think it has to do with disaffected white people feeling like it’s one of the only spaces they have some kind of sense of ownership over, and this violence is in large part a response to ‘wogs’ or ‘lebs’ not just capitulating and staying away.
Hurrah! On the entitlement and ownership of women’s bodies: my friend Chris has a letter in today’s SMH about this very issue. While I found it (strategically?) a bit vague, I was really wondering when someone would bring this up in that fantasy we call “the public sphere”.
